Dictionary of common and invader words

Dictionary of common and invader words

Languages invade, as well as people! It is very interesting to look at everyday words in different languages and find similarities and/or differences. All parter countries have looked at common and invader words - who would have guessed how much we have in common here as well! Of course, languages from the same "language group" share more, but loan words from other language groups to others add up.

For Ireland, invaders brought a whole new language, so there's just a few examples here.

The Romanian sound "ă" is pronounced like the sound of "e" as in "after".

The Romanian sound "ț" is pronounced like "ts" as in "meets".

Local landmarks and monuments

At Springfield Primary, we have had a competition (Years 2 - 6) to create a fact file about a famous local landmark or monument which are the legacy of an invasion. The school council will then be involved in choosing the best 10 which will be used in one of our final products; a book about local landmarks and monuments.

Here are some of the fact files which the children have completed.

What did the Romans do for us?

In year 3 we have been learning about the Romans and how they influenced the UK we live in today. Here are some posters the children created to show some of the things the Romans brought to us. There is also a picture of a Roman display from Year 3 which shows some of the other work we have done about the Romans.

Year 3 Roman Day

Over this term, year 3 are learning about the Romans and how and when they invaded Europe. We have learnt, acted out and written stories about Boudicca who rebelled against the Romans. We have also learnt about some of the things the Romans brought to England and the other countries they invaded e.g. central heating, straight roads etc.

For this topic, we had a Roman Day which involved us dressing up and role playing as Romans. A lot of art and design took place, as well as drama and dance. Here are some photos to give you an idea of what we did and the costumes wore for the day...
